Runn 'n' Gunn (C64) is a free action game for PC created by indie developer Carleton Handley. It is a retro side-scrolling shooter that follows the adventures of a super soldier who is part of an elite galactic team tasked with protecting Earth from any alien threats coming its way.

Joining games, such as C64 Commando Remake and Space Firehawk (C64), Runn 'n' Gunn (C64) is developed specifically for the classic 8-bit home computer system, the Commodore 64. It boasts pixel graphics, as well as supports both PAL and NTSC video format standards.

Super Soldier program

Runn 'n' Gunn (C64) follows the story of infantry soldiers Willamina “Willie” Runn and Wallace “Wally” Gunn. An army experiment gone wrong changes their lives forever, fusing them together to become a super soldier. The whole incident was covered up, and they were recruited to C.O.M.M.O.D.O.R.E 64, an elite squad of the 64 soldiers on the planet to defend against alien threats.

As the latest member of the said team, you will be sent on various missions to space and to the edge of the galaxy to intercept and stop alien threats before they reach Earth. Your latest assignment is to go to the planet of Bantaya to locate and face a mysterious lifeform that is looking to invade your home planet and stop its plans by any means necessary.

The controls are straightforward and you'll run, jump, and shoot your way through enemies in no time. Just a couple of things worth mentioning. The first is that the game is still in active development, thus expect more changes, addition, and bug fixes to come in future updates. Also, the joystick controls are a little unintuitive, but the developer is already working to address it.

Running and gunning it

If you're a fan of games for the Commodore 64 and its multiple system iterations, then Runn 'n' Gunn (C64) is a fun little title to add to your list of things to play next. It has that distinct and charming retro vibe with humor and gameplay to back it up. It's not yet complete, but it's already a solid experience in its current state and well worth checking out.
